Waste Management Philosophy & Planning

IDEC is committed to reducing the amount of waste generated by its activities and contractors will minimise waste at source where possible. IDEC uses a approach to providing drilling fluid, solids control and waste management services. Close cooperation in planning and execution with our clients is also considered a critical part of the overall Waste Management Process.

IDEC utilize tried and trusted project management and environmental management techniques to combine fluids, engineering, solids control and drilling waste management services; aimed to provide a continuous value adding service which delivers improved environmental performance.

By adopting the waste management hierarchy principle with our customers, IDEC is able to prioritise and optimize drilling operations to meet environmental and legislative requirements

The use of optimised Fluid Management, and Solids Control allows the bulk of treatment to be carried out at the top of the hierarchy.

IDEC fully embrace the philosophy of the 5 ‘R’s with regard to waste produced during drilling operations. Reduce – reclaim – recycle – re-use mantra has been applied successfully in a number of operations globally.

The highest level of waste minimization is to reduce at source.

The next level is to re-use components as much as possible in their original state.

Following down the pyramid, is the recycling of components for other purposes than originally utilized.

If possible, components need to be recovered from the waste stream and used further up the pyramid.

Finally, the waste stream remaining that cannot be recovered, recycled, re-used or reduced is the residue, to be isolated and disposed of in a responsible manner.

IDEC has successfully applied a rigorous integrated process on a number of projects globally, based around the 5 ‘R’s and has been able to reduce dramatically the volume sent for disposal of contaminated fluid produced by drilling operations.

Dealing with the high volumes of solids and fluids produced while drilling is only part of today’s Drilling Waste Management story. IDEC offers a proactive approach that provides new opportunities to reduce the consumption of resources and increase their reuse. Alongside compliance with environmental regulations, our solutions are also helping customers improve performance; both operationally and economically.

We work with our clients to:

  • Address all waste management challenges while keeping pace with drilling
  • Meet or exceed local regulations, as well as corporate responsibility and sustainability objectives
  • Improve well site economics and the viability of operations
  • Minimize produced waste volumes and treatment requirements
  • Introduce onsite treatment capabilities that minimize or remove the need for costly waste transportation
  • Increase the reuse of valuable drilling fluids and natural resources to minimize consumption and waste volumes
  • Preserve fluid quality to protect downhole equipment, prevent NPT, improve drilling performance and protect the production potential of the reservoir
